First made in 1946, Nutella is the brand name of an Italian sweetened hazelnut chocolate spread which is popular all over the world and which children love! Parents consider it as a jar full of nutritious hazelnuts and a bit of chocolate and they feed their children with it as a part of a healthy and balanced breakfast.
Nutella Health Benefits Are Nonexistent
Nutella has no health benefits because it contains only 10% of the actual spread containing hazelnuts. For example, two tablespoons of Nutella contain 11 grams of fat (3.5g saturated), and 21 grams of sugar, which is 200 calories. A normal chocolate bar contains 12-16 grams of fat and is 250 calories. According to the label on the jar, Nutella contains: “Sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skin milk, reduced minerals whey (milk), soy lecithin as emulsifier, vanillin: an artificial flavor” So, sugar is the number one ingredient and hazelnuts are on the third place.
Let`s take a deep look at some of these “natural” ingredients.
- Palm Oil
A human trial in 1997 found that an active ingredient in palm oil causes increased blood cholesterol levels. Another study, in 1999, published the dangerous effects of oxidized palm oil, found in many processed foods, including Nutella. Oxidized palm oil causes reproductive toxicity and is toxic to liver, kidney, heart and lungs.
- Reduced Minerals Whey
Whey is the product of cows that have been fed GMOs, hormones and antibiotics. The whey is dried out with heat and with this process it loses almost 90% of its nutrients, making it completely useless.
- Soy Lecithin
Soy lecithin is produced when a chemical solvent extracts soybean oil from raw soybeans. Then, it is “degummed” by water until the lecithin is separated from the oil. It is bleached in a dried stated with hydrogen peroxide.
Vanillin is chemically made in a lab, using petroleum and is 95% of only the scent of vanilla, with barely any traces of real vanilla. Also, it contains MSG which has harmful levels of excitotoxin and glutamate. Many scientists think that excitotoxin leads to many neurological disorders, such as migraines and seizures.
